Matchup in Durham reunites Illinois Graduates
November 30, 2004 Written by Jason McGee
Basketball stars from the state of Illinois were reunited Tuesday night. The atmosphere was intense inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. The famous Cameron Crazies were in full regalia as they prepared for the beginning of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge. Both Duke University and Michigan State featured alumni of Illinois high school baskeball in the starting lineup as the ball was dropped for the opening tip.
This high powered matchup of two top 10 teams and national powers pitted Sean Dockery against Shannon Brown. Dockery was a graduate of Chicago Julian in the class of 2002. Shannon Brown was recruited by Tom Izzo after he graduated in 2003 from Proviso East. Both of these guards were standouts in high school and have now carried their skills to the next level, each representing the finest in Illinois prep hoops.
Shannon Brown Contributed 6 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Dockery accounted for 4 points, 1 steal, 1 assist, and 3 rebounds. The two players both had an impact down the stretch. With the score tied 69 all, Shannon Brown caught an alley-oop dunk to put State up 71-69. Then with Duke only up by one, Dockery came back and hit a huge jumper that put Michigan State away. The final score was Duke 81, Michigan State 74.
Dockery is another representative of the pipeline Duke has laid down in Illinois. With previous recruits such as Corey Maggette and would be recruit Shaun Livingston, Illinois hoops continues to show that the nations top programs recognize the talent being produced.
