Trey Blue: Player Journal 1
November 16, 2004

What’s up everybody! My name is Trey Blue and I am a 6’2" 175-pound sophomore guard from Percy L. Julian High School on Chicago’s Southside. This is my first player journal and I’m very pleased that MidStateHoops.com has asked me to participate in this great honor.

Before I get into the journal, I would like to thank God for blessing me with everything. I also appreciate that he has given me this opportunity.

For those who don’t know, I attended South Holland’s Thornwood my freshman season. I gained a lot of experience playing varsity basketball last season and learned many things from Coach Curran. I’m sure many of you are wondering why I left Thornwood for Julian. Trust me, I can’t walk down the block, let alone step into a basketball gym without being asked the same question. Leaving my home and community was not easy and if you’re looking for a reason why I transferred, there isn’t really just one specific reason.

My first year in high school was so exciting. Playing varsity basketball and being a downstate qualifier for the 3-point shootout was more than I imagined I would experience in my first year of high school. As the basketball season would come to a cease, I was getting excited about playing varsity baseball which I also play for those who didn’t know. It just so happened that the Sunday before the 3-point shootout in Peoria, I broke my foot during my first practice with Ferrari my AAU Team. I knew that was the end of my baseball season, however, I was determined to at least make an attempt to compete in the 3-point shootout and I did. I took off my temporary cast and went out there and did my thing on the Thursday after I broke my foot. Given that I hadn’t touched a ball in 4 days, I didn’t do half bad. That next Monday, I had foot surgery.

Making the transition from the South Suburbs to the City of Chicago has been very exciting yet interesting. I’ve had to get use to how things go on the court and off, especially figuring out how to ride the CTA! School is fun and there are always a lot of things going on. Before I knew anyone besides the team, people would come up to me and say what’s up? Then they discovered my last name, and now when people I know say what’s up, all you hear is, Blue! Most of them probably don’t even know my first name. It’s pretty funny and most of the people at school are cool. As for the educational side, I am currently taking honors classes at Julian. Last school year, I ranked 27th out of 782 students in my class and finished the year with a 3.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Coach Jackson, Julian’s head varsity basketball coach, knows what type of person that I am and that’s the type of coach I need. I have a good relationship with him and he helps me a lot with basketball and life situations. I especially like that we can all just chill at his crib anytime.

This summer wasn’t the best but I had a lot of fun. I got off to a slow start playing AAU with Ferrari after my foot injury but I was still able to have some success on the court. We won a lot of tournaments in Illinois, went to the Spiece Run N’ Slam Classic, and placed second in the 15U National Tournament. I also got to play a couple 16U tournaments this summer against some top competition in Illinois. Speaking in general about the summer, I don’t feel I played to my best ability but it was fun playing against some of the top players in the country and showing what I could do against them. Being out of competition for 8 weeks slowed me down and it took almost the whole summer for me to get myself back to where I was.

Afterwards, I showed up at Julian. I knew I had to work hard in order to succeed. After a couple weeks at Julian, I went to the Five-Star Camp in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. My teammate, Jeremiah Kelly, and I, teamed together at the camp and ran through some tough competition. Unfortunately, he broke his wrist the day before the playoffs so freshman, Ashton Gibbs and I led our team to the championship. ‘Miah and I played against some of the top ‘07 players in the country, including, Mike Coburn, Malike Boothe, Corey Stokes, Corey Fisher, Joshua Spivey, Miles Beatty, Terrell McKenzie, Jesse Woodard, and Darius Gabriel. Most of these kids are listed top 25 in the country. The head coach of the UConn Huskies, Jim Calhoun, also had a few words of wisdom for us.

I’ve added about 10 pounds since the summer. I’ve been hitting the weights hard, working on my ball handling drills everyday and getting up about 400 shots a day. After playing the shooting guard slot most of the summer, I am concentrating on perfecting my game at the lead guard. Practice is intense, and when I say intense, I mean intense.

I’m looking forward to the upcoming season starting with the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Tournament and of course the conference play and Proviso West Tournament. I am also looking forward to a new style of play and facing the great talent in the city. Most importantly, I am excited about the learning opportunities that I will be presented with during this season.

It seems like it was just yesterday that I was waiting for my first High School game, now I’m waiting for my first CPS High School game and I can’t wait!

I would like to thank my parents and Mom Judy, give a shout out to Coach and the rest of the squad, and also my guy Colby Johnson at Thornwood. I would also like to give a shout out to my sister, Krystal, my cousin Vee of Von, and one of my best friends Danae Russell and her family.

That’s all I got to say in this journal, so I’ll get at y’all later.

Ya boy,
Trey Blue
