Trey Blue: Player Journal 8
November 24, 2005
What's up everybody,
I know it's been a while since my last journal but I've finally got a day off on this wondeful Thanksgiving so I'll drop one in for you guys.
High School Basketball has started and everyones excited. Practice has been going very good. In September and October I would have up to 3 workouts a day. 6 a.m. workouts, after school, and at night with some of my AAU teammates at a local gym. This season is going to be exciting for us. Our coach is pushing us very hard every day in practice and everyone's getting better daily. We were Pre-Season ranked number 19 by the Chicago Suntimes Newspaper but we don't look at that as being something to make us better.
We have a lot of underclassmen on our roster who have played varsity 2 or 3 years. I feel that we have one of the best junior classes around. Myself, Reggie Hamilton, and Colby Johnson will control the backcourt for the next 2 years. Right now, Colby is out with a knee injury but we should expect him back within a month or so. We have a pair of nice wings in 6'4 junior Cameron Snelling and 6'5 senior Rashad Singleton. 6'0 senior guard Brandon Merke also has 3 years of varsity experience and is ready for a breakout season. We have good guards but look out for 6'5 freshman, Steve Walker. He's a load inside and he has a good work ethic. He is continuing to get better every day. He's understanding the game a little better now and has a chance to be one of the best big men in our conference for the next couple of years. Now, with good guards and a tough inside prescense, I think we can have some fun this season.
We started off the season with the Lincoln-Way East Thanksgiving Tournament. We went 3-0 beating Brother Rice, Kenwood, and Lincoln-Way East all by double digits. I was the MVP of the tournament averaging 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists through the 3 games. My teammate, Reggie Hamilton earned All-Tournament Team honors as well. We have 10 days of practice before our next game which is December 9th against Rich South. Practice makes perfect and we take our practices seriously. We all get better each time we step in the gym.
As for me, on my first report card this year I posted straight A's. I was really happy because I've been working hard to keep my grades up even though basketball has been picking up. I've also been eating really good and consistently drinking protien shakes. I've been putting on calories so I have more to burn in our tough practices. I've been keeping my body toned by lifting light throughout the week. Now, that we're off for 10 days, I'm going to work on my legs a little more so I build strength and endurance so I can continue to play the whole game throughout the long season. Everyday either before or after practice, or even inbetween, I get up to 500 jumpshots or more in. My number one concern now is running our team. I have to be verbal, and a leader both of and off the floor. I feel that the guys on our team respect me and well all know each other well. I'm keeping my ball handling tight as well because I'll be running point the majority of the time this season and I'll be more of a playmaker as well. It is my job to provide the intensity and to get our team going whether it be scoring, pushing the ball and making plays, or playing tough on the ball defense. Our team has been cracking down on our defensive drill work. We really strive to stop our opponents.
Our conference, which consists of us (Thornwood), Thornton, T.F. North, T.F. South, Thornride, and Bloom is regarged as one of the best conferences in the state. It should be an exciting conference game every night. It will be challenging for us and all the teams in our conference to come out and play night in and night out.
Look out for our 2 seniors Brandon Merke and Rashad Singleton to have great seasons. Look for 6'4 unheralded junior forward Cameron Snelling, to have a strong season as well. Look out for an exciting season of Thornwood basketball!!!
Until Next Time,
Trey Blue # 3
I also would like to give special recognition to Reginald JacQuan Jenkings, a close friend, who was shot and killed in Kansas City, Missouri. R.I.P JacQuan....
